Uniform

The Greenwich Free School has high expectations of pupils in all areas, and uniform is no exception. Wearing the correct uniform in the correct manner is one of the ways that our pupils show they take pride in themselves and in their school. We think it is sad how many children wear the team strip of their favourite football team with great pride, but don't take similar pride in their school community.

We have a traditional uniform, strictly enforced. We know that uniform is one of the outward signs by which the local community recognises and makes judgements about pupils. We want those judgements to be entirely positive. We also know that uniform is vital in creating a disciplined and well-ordered learning environment in school.

The uniform includes options for a Shalwar-Kameez, which can be purchased from our school suppliers, and pupils are allowed to wear religious items such as a turban, hijab (plain and in the school colours) or kara. The Kirpan is not allowed.

Other than the kara, pupils are not allowed to wear jewellery beyond small, plain stud earrings and a watch. Pupils have to take out earrings during PE lessons.

Pupils may have cornrows or braids in their hair, but should not have patterns shaved into their hair or eyebrows. Neither girls nor boys should have hair dyed in non-natural colours.

Any outdoor clothing must be plain and in the school colours (black, grey or blue) and must be kept in a locker during the school day (or in classroom storage space in year 1).

What happens if pupils are not wearing the correct uniform?

As mentioned above, we are very strict about pupils wearing their uniform correctly.

If a pupil comes to school with incorrect uniform we attempt to give them a replacement item (for example, they will borrow a tie). If they cannot borrow the item they are sent home to change. This will of course mean that they are missing important lesson time, so we encourage pupils and their families to ensure they come to school correctly dressed. Pupils who have to borrow items or go home to change will also be issued with a detention.

Purchasing the Uniform

As mentioned above, there are only four items that must be purchased from our school suppliers. These are the blazer, tie, jumper, and sports top. Other items can be purchased from any shop, but must fit the descriptions given. We will have spare uniform items in school, so that if pupils come to school in items which do not fit the description (for example, in trainers, a non-standard shirt or a skirt that is too short) they will be able to borrow items from the school. If they cannot they will be sent home to change. We therefore ask parents to make sure that children come to school appropriately dressed, so that no learning time is wasted.

Our school uniform supplier is Khalsa Schoolwear. They have a shop in Bethnal Green, but will be coming into school regularly to sell to parents, and you can of course buy items online.
