Our site: Adair House

Adair House is a large building located at 403 Shooters Hill Rd, SE18 4LH, opposite the old Royal Herbert Hospital building and backing onto Woolwich Common. There are lots of bus routes that go up and down Shooters Hill Road, making it easy for our pupils to come to school by themselves as they become more independent.

In 2012/13, we are accommodated in well-provisioned temporary accommodation, at our Adair House site. We have secured planning permission and funding to develop the site into a well-appointed new school during 2013 and will move into the new accommodation during academic year 2013/14.

Our architects, Hunters, are the winners of multiple national and international design awards for their school buildings, including from the British Council of School Environments and the Times Educational Supplement.

We are excited about the design for the school. Adair House will become a mixture of offices, sixth form and student support accommodation. It will be augmented with a new building behind and to its right, with a central courtyard into which we can spill into when the weather is good, to eat our lunch or have a philosophical discussion under a tree! It is almost like a city square or piazza, and will form the heart of the school, bringing the old and new buildings together.

Over the coming months, we will be working on the interior design. Hunters have produced some initial sketches: on the left is the main hall, ready to host a musical concert, prize giving, or Shakespeare festival; on the right is an idea for the the dining hall, a large airy space where teachers and pupils can enjoy eating together.

Here is a map showing where Adair House is, and some photos of the building before we started work... it's very sad that such a beautiful old building has fallen into disrepair, and become so dilapidated, but we are very happy to be involved in restoring it and bringing it back to life!
